A £550,000 scheme to improve the road surface along Hornsea’s main shopping street will get underway next month.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council is to resurface the full length of Newbegin – between its junctions with Market Place and Cliff Road – with work due to start on Monday 3 September.
The majority of work will be carried out at night, between the hours of 6pm and 11pm, in order to avoid disruption to local businesses and residents.
Newbegin and all routes within the shopping area will be open as usual during daytime hours. No work will be carried out at weekends.
The work is expected to take approximately six weeks to complete.
Dave Waudby, head of infrastructure and facilities at East Riding of Yorkshire Council said: “To avoid any major disruption, we have timed these works for after the main summer season and the majority will be carried out at night.
“We want to thank businesses, residents and motorists in advance for their patience while the work is carried out, but this resurfacing is necessary as the condition of the road surface has deteriorated.
“Road users will notice a big improvement when it’s completed.”
The work will be carried out in three phases by council contractors Britcon (UK) Ltd:
• Phase One – Localised footpath works will take place along Newbegin on weekdays for the first three weeks, between 9.30am and 3.30pm under temporary traffic lights.
• Phase Two – Road resurfacing will be carried out between Market Place and the Co-op supermarket car park between 6pm to 11pm on weekdays.
• Phase Three – Road resurfacing will take place between the Co-op supermarket car park and just past the junction with Cliff Road between 6pm and 11pm on weekdays.
Phase One
The footpath works will include small sections of resurfacing and the replacement of pedestrian guardrails and kerbstones.
It will also include the installation of a piece of pavement art near Hornsea Museum and various Hornsea Pottery designed tiles will be set into the footpath along Newbegin for the Hornsea Pottery Art Trail project.
Phases Two and Three
Phases two and three will be carried out under a temporary evening road closure, with signed diversions in place via Market Place, Eastgate and Cliff Road, or Marine Drive and New Road.
The works will alternate between Phases Two and Three, with no works being carried out on both phases at the same time, meaning only half of Newbegin will be closed to evening traffic.
Access to the working area will only be permitted to residents and business owners.
Motorists are asked not to leave their cars parked on Newbegin during the evening works.
Businesses and residents on Newbegin will be notified of the proposed working dates in advance.
