Graham Stuart MP’s visit to site of proposed new Hollym Water Treatment Works

On Friday 7 July, Graham Stuart, Member of Parliament for Beverley & Holderness, accompanied by local East Riding Councillor, Lyn Healing, will visit the proposed site for the new Hollym Water Treatment Works. The present treatment works is 70 metres from the cliff face which is eroding and must move to a new location.

Back in 2015 Graham heard from residents in Hollym and Withernsea who were concerned about how they may be affected by Yorkshire Water’s proposal to re-site the water treatment works which treats Withernsea’s sewerage. Residents, supported by their MP, Graham Stuart, mounted a successful campaign to stop Yorkshire Water going ahead with their preferred site which was unacceptable to residents.

Following eighteen months of consultation, Yorkshire Water has come up with a new proposed site, to the south of Hollym, which it hopes will receive a positive reception.

Ahead of Friday’s visit, Graham Stuart MP said: “The original proposal for a new water treatment works was unacceptable to residents and I commend the work they, East Riding Councillors and Hollym Parish Council undertook to make their voices heard and get Yorkshire Water to think again. I’m very much looking forward to seeing for myself on Friday the new proposed site south of Hollym and how it will be better for residents than the last plan put forward.”

Councillor Lyn Healing commented: “In 2015 Withernsea residents told me they were up in arms that the proposed treatment works might lead to unpleasant smells in the town and so I’m cautiously pleased that Yorkshire Water have thought again and come up with this new plan. I sit on the Planning Committee which will determine a planning application in due course and so I’m taking a very close interest in how this matter progresses.”

John Bond, Communications Adviser to Yorkshire Water said: “Over the last eighteen months we’ve been consulting with customers in the Withernsea and Hollym areas regarding our plans to relocate Withernsea Sewage Treatment Works, located off Holmpton Road. There are three elements required for us to be able to relocate the treatment facility. The three different parts of the scheme include a new sewer to transfer flows from Withernsea, a new long sea outfall and the new treatment works to the south of Hollym village. I’m looking forward to showing Graham Stuart MP and Councillor Lyn Healing our plans on Friday.”

In the next six months Yorkshire Water will put the new proposal out to consultation to residents in Hollym and Withernsea, in advance of making a planning application.
