Cemetery
England’s Hill cemetery, more frequently referred to as Hull Road cemetery, is situated on the outskirts of Withernsea along Hull Road in the direction of Rimswell. Set in tranquil countryside the beautifully kept cemetery is a credit to the town and Withernsea Town Council, whose gardeners take great pride in keeping the cemetery clean and tidy.
Opened in 1910, no charge was made for the first burial in the cemetery when Edith Siddle deceased of Bannister Street, a 34 year old housewife, was interred in plot 16 on 20th March. For some reason plot 1 was not used until 7th March 1911 when Joseph Simon deceased, a 79 year old former draper of Hull Road, was interred. The records for the original part of the cemetery give an often poignant snapshot of those times; from family plots with several generations from infants to octogenarians to graves of young men killed in the Great War.
The cemetery was extended in 1953 to meet the demands of the town, and the new sections were numbered alphabetically. The majority of the new sections were consecrated on Thursday 3rd June 1954 by the Right Reverend H T Voden, Lord Bishop of Kingston upon Hull. Sections J and L were later consecrated by the Right Reverend D G Snelgrove, Bishop of Hull on Sunday 21st February 1993. D section, however, remains unconsecrated to meet religious needs.
Sadly on Tuesday 6th July 2004 the cemetery was extensively vandalised, particularly the children and babies section, causing great distress and bewilderment to relatives whose loved ones graves were maliciously and needlessly damaged. The Mayor at the time, Councillor Stuart Woodruff, decided to raise money through the Mayor’s Charity Fund to help families with the cost of repairing their loved ones memorial stones. The response of the townspeople, local businesses and schools was immediate and overwhelmingly generous with a total of £3,070.50 being raised and 70 families receiving financial help to repair or replace damaged memorials.
Further adjoining land was purchased in 2001 to ensure the long term future of the cemetery, and to give the people of Withernsea the opportunity to inter their loved ones close by for many more years to come.
The following charges are applicable from 1st April 2025. These fees are reviewed annually and are subject to change.

Cemetery records for England’s Hill are held at the Town Council offices, together with an informal note of the burials at St Nicholas’ churchyard. If you are tracing your family history or simply want to know exactly where someone is buried please do not hesitate to contact the Town Council staff who will be pleased to help you with your search. There is no charge for this service. Please note that the records for England’s Hill are held chronologically and not alphabetically so an approximate year of burial would be desirable.
Funeral Directors
The list shows Funeral Directors who have provided a note of any professional affiliation(s), and a copy of their indemnity insurance, to Withernsea Town Council and agreed to abide by our Rules & Regulations for Funeral Directors.
Approved Stonemasons
The list gives details of Stonemasons who are approved to work within the cemetery, who have provided a copy of their indemnity insurance and who are listed on the National Association of Monumental Masons (NAMM) website.
Chapel Plaques
The Burial Authority, Withernsea Town Council recognises that families often wish to commemorate their lost loved one that may not be interred in their local cemetery. We also understand that families often choose to retain ashes or scatter them in a personal place for remembrance purposes, but still want a place to reflect and remember the departed within the grounds of the cemetery.
We are therefore offering a new service for families to purchase a standard memorial plaque that will be erected on the chapel walls, so that upon visiting, there is a personal place designated just for you and your memories.
